The Joinery Co. Reclaims the Largest Post & Beam Building in the World

In the summer of 1994, The Joinery Co. successfully negotiated the purchase of all reclaimed heart pine timbers and planking from the world’s largest and most famous post and beam building–the Sears & Roebuck Complex in Chicago, Illinois.
The Sears & Roebuck complex was begun by Richard W. Sears in 1905 and completed in 1906. With 5 million square feet of floor space, spanning two city blocks, it served as workspace for more than 9,000 employees in 1906. At that time, it was the world’s largest commercial building and a fitting home for what would later become the “World’s Largest Store”. In 1906, its employees filled orders for nearly 5 million customers. At its height, there were 22,000 employees working there. One can only imagine the number of customers that Sears served during that period. During the early part of the twentieth century, the Sears, Roebuck & Company facility was reputed to be the largest post and beam building ever built anywhere in the world.
When the last truckload of Reclaimed Heart Pine had been shipped to North Carolina and processed, over 12,000,000 board feet of timbers and planks had been salvaged and recycled by The Joinery Co. into wide plank flooring, millwork, cabinets, and fine furniture.
Under The Joinery Co. brand, “The Beauty of Recycling”, these unique products were delivered to famous addresses worldwide. The incredible quality of the Reclaimed Heart Pine from the Sears, Roebuck and Company complex exemplified the finest Longleaf Pine that America’s Virgin Forests had to offer. The Joinery Co.’s reclamation and recycling of the Sears & Roebuck Complex was the largest reclamation project in the world. This beautiful wood, as well as the building itself, were uniquely American in every way and will long be remembered in The Reclaimed Wood Industry as the standard by which both reclamation and Reclaimed Heart Pine Flooring are measured.

Dewey V. Hudson
“I’ve never considered my work a job. The Joinery Co. and my other companies are simply the results of my passion for beautiful woods. That beauty has been a driving force in me for as long as I can remember.”
Dewey Hudson has been designing and manufacturing unique flooring products since the early 1970s. He is one of the founders of the Reclaimed Wood Industry. His work has been recognized both in the United States and abroad by awards, publications, and patents.
The Joinery Co. has been a leader in the Reclaimed Wood Industry for more than four decades. It grew from a small company in the early 1970s to an uncontested industry leader by 1995. In 1994, the Joinery Co. successfully reclaimed 12,000,000 board feet of timbers and planks from the largest timber frame structure ever built. These Reclaimed Heart Pine products were shipped all over the world and represented the largest reclamation project of its kind in the twentieth century.
As the twenty-first century was about to get underway, Dewey was awarded an important US patent in Laminated Wood Products for a new wood matching technique he invented. Today, The Joinery Co. continues to use that patent to make its unique engineered floors, cabinetry, and furniture. Dewey has continued to travel the globe on a regular basis looking for ways to apply the patent, expand The Joinery`s product lines, and strengthen its brands. As a result of those efforts, The Joinery has developed many strong relationships around the world with designers, architects, and contract manufacturers. The Joinery Co. is well organized and has at its disposal a perfect network of companies, craftsmen, and technical services to handle any and all projects anywhere in the world.
